HWN Mangrove Planting, Bang Pu
November 2021 The Humanitarian Women's Network in Bangkok gave a little something back to nature. At Bang Pu recreation centre the group planted 120 mangrove trees to help restore the forest which provides vital coastal defence and is home to an abundance of wildlife. We also removed over 24 very large bin bags of litter, mostly plastics, from this delicate coastal habitat. The majority of this is washed in by the tides and it was a very visual reminder to refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle. Many local visitors stopped by to learn what we were doing and some even helped us out!
November 2021 We enjoyed a fun-filled day exploring the tropical forest and grasslands at Khao Yai National Park. Hiking along the Km33 trail we learnt about different plant species and adaptations, we also came across lots of fresh elephant poo, so they must have passed by recently. The trail opens up from the tropical forest onto the grasslands where we discovered the salt lick and looked for other evidence of animal life. After a delicious lunch with a beautiful view over the river we completed the short nature trail before heading back to Bangkok.
Bang Pu Clean Up
October 2021 What a change a couple of hours in the mangroves makes… - We planted 50 small mangrove trees which will flourish into a forest creating habitat for marine and bird life. - We cleaned up a patch of the mangrove forest, filling over 20 bin liners with waste that washes in and gets trapped, mostly plastic and styrofoam. -We spent time with new people who share our interest in caring for the future of our planet.
Learning Outside the Classroom Teacher Day- Natural Colour
October 2021 As technology starts to become important, often local wisdom and skills starts to be forgotten. On this Learning Outside the Classroom PD Day, we shared knowledge of natural colours with nearly 100 teachers at Prem International School. We taught them how to extract colour from natural ingredients and different ways to use it: watercolour and tie dye. Furthermore, we discussed how teachers could use this information and activities to support their classroom learning.
Grade 2- Teambuilding
October 2021 On Tuesday and Thursday’s afternoon in October, we prepared a range of team activities, roughly 2 hours, for Prem Grade 2 students to enhance their communication and team building skills, Games included caterpillar, gutter ball, trust walk and using grass skis. While experiencing different activities, the students learnt how to stay calm, think about solutions and communicate effectively with each other. The students had lots of fun and hopefully these skills will be transferred to other learning experiences and enable them to become sustainable thinkers.
Prem G3 Pollinator Activity
On Wednesday Oct 27, we were observing the structure of flowers using stereoscopes with Grade 3 students, to understand how the pollination process works and why plants need pollinators. On Wednesday Nov 3, as school was closed during the pandemic, we continued learning about pollination via an online matching game. Students enjoyed matching the pollinator with different shapes of flowers at the Three-Generation farm. Everyone is looking forward to planting their own flowers after the school re-opens.
Prem Grade 3 – Deforestation, November – December 2021 Forest Harvesting Game (online) As school remained closed, Barge team created a game for Grade 3 students to understand how important forests are through the forest harvesting game. The game highlighted the many economic benefits that humans get from the forest!
1 Dec 2021, Forest Webbing game (online) After knowing the economic benefits of the forest, students learned the interrelationships between species in the forest. They found out how species are "interdependent" on each other for their survival and how this connection builds up a complex system which provides goods and services to us all.
Orienteering with Prem G3/4
Interpreting the campus map to seek out the orienteering posts, provided G3/4 students with an active afternoon and the chance to put their team working skills into practice too.
Bird Beak Adaptations
Barge staff were really pleased to lead a session with Prem Grade 2 this week. Everyone was very excited and enjoyed the activity which related to bird adaptations. Students role played different birds with specific tools representing beaks which they used to grab different items of food. Understanding about adaptation grew with each round of the game.
Water Testing, Prem G6
Finding out about the pollutants in water while water testing, helps students to consider how humans impact water sources.
Collaborative Map Making
Maps tell us things! Prem G3/4 conducted a bio-blitz as they explored a new area, then worked collaboratively to create a map showing in which areas wildlife was found.
The great thing about environmental education is that it embraces the arts as well as the sciences. Prem G10 worked with Traidhos Barge Program staff to awaken their senses prior to creating language rich poetry. The session included walking bare foot over well mown grass, feeling squelchy mud and crumbling dry leaves. We look forward to enjoying their poetry when it is displayed in an outdoor setting.
How mountains form
January 2022, Traidhos Barge Program delivers virtual "Journey Through the Chao Phraya Watershed" programs to on-line learners. From learning about the mountains in Chiang Mai to undertaking a virtual river observation, or forest animal walk, on-line learners discuss connections and sustainable actions connected to these habitats.
Dig in a Box
Empathising with and understanding the work of archaeologists in uncovering, mapping, cataloguing, and interpreting historical evidence was explored by Prem G6 during a "dig in a box". Students enjoyed this hands on activity as part of a social studies unit that looks at local history and what interpretations of evidence can tell us.
Taking Enviromental Action, G10 Prem
“As the citizen of the world, taking action to make a better world should be our responsibility.” On the 3rd & 8th of February, Prem Grade 10 students took part in environmental based activities, exploring the targets and indicators of Sustainable Development Goals 13 Climate Action, Goal 14 Life below water, Goal 15 Life on land. Students were engaged learning/Experimenting about environmental issues and discovering positive actions to achieving a sustainable future under the concept of “Environmentalism and Leadership.”
Paddleboarding with St Andrews 107
St Andrews 107, Y7 Chanthaburi March 7-11, 2022 Throughout the week, St.Andrews 107 students grew their comfort zone as they snorkeled over the coral reef, considered biodiversity while hiking along a waterfall and explored mangrove habitats from paddle boards. Facilitated by passionate Traidhos Barge Program environmental educators, students investigated real life issues raised by the SDG targets and used Compass Education tools to think more deeply about systemic sustainability during community interactions. It was a fantastic week with students willing to embrace everything.
St Andrews USA Bangkok canals
14 - 15 March 2022 St. Andrew, USA To understand Thai culture from the past until nowadays, the group visited the World Heritage site at Ayutthaya, Floating Market at Damnoen Saduak, Ratchaburi and took a Klong Tour through Bangkok. It was such a wonderful two-day trip! Students experienced new foods, meeting new people, and witnessed the new culture of Thailand, providing unforgettable memories for us all.
Create a watershed
ISB G4 March and April 2022 Students investigated the importance of the Chao Phraya River with a series of day trips which found them observing life along the river banks, discovering the role of water hyacinth and considering how everyone needs to take action to improve the health of rivers.
ICS planting mangroves 2022
May 2022, Mangrove habitats matter! that was the message G5 International Community School students went home with after investigating the biodiversity of bird life, the amazing adaptations of plants and the role these trees play in protecting the coastline. Students showed they cared by collecting many bags of rubbish washed up by the tide and planting over 210 young trees. Everyone was proud to contribute to the on going work to regenerate this area close to Bangkok.
Investigating the needs of people on Ko Kret
May 2022, NIST Y6 used the Compass tool to frame their investigations to identify the needs of people living on Ko Kret. Groups experienced activities with different stakeholders making local sweets, sorting rubbish, completing batik, making a clay tile and throwing a pot. They interviewed boat drivers, students and vendors. Students identified that tourists coming by boat to the island was a need for everyone, as it allowed them to generate income and keep local culture alive.
Learning about Pottery
May 19, 2022 King's Y3 explored Ko Kret meeting potters, throwing and painting pottery and learning about the Mon people who settled on Ko Kret. It was fun to be learning outside of the classroom.
English Camp: Biodiversity Day
M6 Students from Wat Srisawat School, Nan celebrated Biodiversity Day by compiling a map of plants, fungi, birds, lichen, land and water bugs and other animals found on the Traidhos Campus. They considered the impact on the environment should some of those species become extinct.
Prem G10, Doi Inthanon, June 2022
An overnight trip with Prem G10 explored the theme of "sustainable environment". Students considered the connection between the natural environment of the National Park and the human activity of resident farmers and visiting tourists. It became clear how important communication between all stakeholders is and for the need for policy to be created by a range of stakeholders.
Silver Temple, Chiang Mai
June 2022, Prem G7 Discovering and celebrating the stories of Chiang Mai while considering their own personal stories and sense of place, took Prem G7 to the old city of Chiang Mai to consider different ways that stories can be told through the images created in silver at Wat Sri Suphan, myths and traditions at Wat Chedhi Luang and through photos and accounts at the museum.
