This week nine Visiting School Program (VSP) staff and a group of subcontractors who regularly work with VSP from Chiang Mai Adventure, Chiang Mai Rock Climbing Association and Flight of the Gibbon, are undertaking a Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA) qualification under the watchful eye of Simon Dikes from New Zealand and Khun Ad from CMRCA.

For some of the sixteen participants it is their first introduction to WAFA, but for many of the VSP staff, it is a refresher course since it is three years since they last completed the qualification. The intensive five-day course is designed to equip staff with the confidence and knowledge to handle emergencies out in the field, when quick attention by a medical professional is unlikely to be found. As well as classroom sessions, on-campus scenarios are staged to test knowledge and understanding of how to offer help in an emergency.
